Unrealized Production

UNREALIZED PRODUCTION REQUIREMENTS

GENERAL STIPULATIONS:

The unrealized production will be designed to be presented in Fullerton College’s Campus Theatre. The Campus Theatre is a proscenium style theatre with a 534-seat house where no seat is further than 65′ from the stage. Technical information can be found here: CAMPUS THEATER TECHNICAL DETAILS. The unrealized production consists of 4 design disciplines which are to be presented orally using mood boards, plots, drafts, displays with or without a supplemental PowerPoint presentation.
Points will be awarded based on the student designer’s ability to describe the design and their artistic choices. The student designer should be clear, concise, and confident in order to deliver an effective oral presentation.

Part 1 – SCENIC DESIGN REQUIREMENTS

  1. Ground Plan
    One (1) ground plan (1/2” = 1’0”) drawn by hand or drafted in Vectorworks using USITT graphic standards The model will be evaluated on neatness, lettering, knowledge of standard drafting techniques, and creative use of space.
  2. Model or Rendering
    One (1) rendering OR one (1) 1/2” =1’0” scale model. The model will be evaluated on neatness, use of color and other mediums.
  3. Design Concept
    A design concept describing why specific choices were made related to color, style, texture and line of the design.

Part 2 – LIGHTING DESIGN REQUIREMENTS

  1. Light Plot
    One (1) Light Plot (1/4″ = 1′ or 1/2” = 1’0”) drawn by hand or drafted in Vectorworks using USITT graphic standards. The light plot must be based upon the Campus Theatre house plot which can be modified etc…..The Light Plot must contain a title block and a key to symbols. Title block must contain:
    1. Title of the drawing (Light Plot)
    2. Name of the production
    3. Name of the student designer
    4. Scale of the light plot (e.g., ¼”=1’0”)
  2. Channel Hook Up
    A channel hook up must include channel number, dimmer or circuit number, location, unit number, type and wattage of instrument, focus or purpose, color and template. It is acceptable to use any version of Light Write or Excel.
  1. Design Concept
    A design concept describing why specific choices were made related to visibility, selective focus, modeling and mood.
  2. Color Swatches
    Gel Color swatches or color references.
Part 3 – COSTUME DESIGN REQUIREMENTS
 
  1. Costume Sketches
    Three (3) Character Costume Sketches and (two 2) Decorative Costume Sketches each representing a different character. Each costume sketch must be in color (any medium) and be mounted separately using an 8 1/2″ x 14″ format. Fabric and trim swatches choices must be attached to the front of each costume sketch. Costume sketches must be original designs (no rented costumes or purchased clothing).
  2. Design Concept
    A design concept that contains the following elements:
    1. Justification of your choices for each character in regard to time, era, style, fabric, and color.
    2. Explanation of how your choices revealed each character.
    3. The concept will be evaluated on creativity, balance in color, use of texture, harmony, and the overall visual aspect of each costume, as well as how your design(s) supported the mood and structure of the production.
Part 4 – GRAPHIC DESIGN REQUIREMENTS
  1. Graphic Design
    The Graphic Design can be a poster, flyer, t-shirt or program cover. All Design entry artwork must be original. Photographs of the design are optional.
  2. Design Concept
    A design concept describing why specific choices were made related to contrast, hierarchy, color, typography, space, balance, proximity, consistency alignment, and repetition in the design.
